Yard Jockey

JOB DESCRIPTION

Manual truck driver who primarily operates a terminal tractor within a warehouse or cargo yard, responsible for moving semi-trailers short distances to and from loading docks, ensuring proper trailer positions for loading and unloading, while also performing routine inspections and maintenance checks on the yard trucks and trailer to maintain smooth yard operations. 

Key responsibilities of a yard jockey:
    • Moving trailers:

      Operating a terminal tractor to move trailers around the yard, positioning them at designated loading docks for loading and unloading. 

  • Trailer inspections:

    Conducting visual checks on trailers for damage, tire pressure, and proper securing of cargo. 

  • Yard management:

    Coordinating trailer movements to minimize congestion and optimize space within the yard. Other duties around the yard may be assigned like pulling parts, cleaning, etc.

  • Communication:

    Maintaining clear communication with warehouse staff, dock workers, and other truck drivers regarding trailer placement and status. 

  • Basic maintenance:

    Performing minor maintenance checks on the yard tractor, such as checking fluids and lights. 

  • Documentation:
    Maintaining records of trailer movements and inspection reports.
